Woodward Primary Flight Controls
For over 50 years, Woodward has been an industry-recognized expert in design, development, and manufacture of hydraulic primary flight control actuators. Woodward has continuously advanced the state of the art in primary flight control actuator design, from hydromechanical versions on early Douglas and Boeing jet transports to multi-redundant FBW (fly-by-wire) actuators used on modern-day military fighter aircraft. Woodward engineers are developing next generation electrohydrostatic actuators (EHA) that eliminate the need for a central aircraft hydraulic system—reducing weight and increasing system reliability.
Woodward's primary flight control actuators are used to power flight-critical control surfaces, and are incorporated on the advanced F/A-18E/F/G and F-35C aircraft. These actuator designs include:
- Triple-redundant electronic control
- Woodward primary flight control servovalves
- 4,000 and 5,000 psi hydraulics
On-board position loop closure, built in test (BIT), failure monitoring, and IEEE 1394B serial bus (F-35C only)
Woodward primary flight control actuators have demonstrated high performance and high reliability in demanding operational environments.
