Introduction:

Raytheon, a business under RTX, has secured a $250 million contract from Japan’s Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) for the licensed production of the Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) Block 2.

Features:

This agreement marks the latest milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the two companies, supporting Japan’s efforts to strengthen its domestic defense manufacturing and missile defense capabilities. It also reinforces the broader security cooperation between the United States and Japan.

The ESSM Block 2 is a ship-launched, short-to-medium range, dual-mode guided missile that offers enhanced maneuverability and superior performance compared to its Block 1 variant.

With reduced reliance on shipboard illumination, the latest version is compatible with a wide range of combat systems and launchers. It delivers high performance in demanding maritime environments and features advanced digital processing capabilities to address evolving threats through software upgrades.

Japan is among the customer nations for ESSM, which is overseen by the NATO SEASPARROW Consortium a partnership of 12 allied countries.
