Introduction:

Raytheon, a business under RTX, has received a $205 million contract from the U.S. Navy to continue producing the Phalanx Close-In Weapon System (CIWS).

Features:

The Phalanx is a fast-firing, computer-controlled, radar-guided gun designed to destroy anti-ship missiles and other close-range threats that break through earlier defence layers. It is fitted on all U.S. Navy surface combatant ships and used by 24 allied nations.

In January 2024, the USS Gravely successfully used the Phalanx system to intercept a Houthi missile in the Red Sea just seconds before impact, protecting over 300 sailors onboard.

Work under this contract will be carried out in Louisville, Kentucky, and other U.S. locations until 2029.
