Milrem Robotics launches its new Type-X RCV

13 January 2021

The Type-X middle-class robotic combat vehicle (RCV) from European leader in robotics and autonomous systems development, Milrem Robotics, has passed initial testing of mobility.

The Type-X will become a smart companion to leading tanks and infantry fighting vehicles and will be able to take on the most dangerous tasks and positions, resulting in lower mortality risks.

"The Type-X will provide firepower and tactical use equal to or greater than that of a unit equipped with infantry fighting vehicles. It provides a means of destroying enemy defensive positions with minimal risk to one's troops and substitution of a lost RCV is purely a logistical nuance, "says Kuldar Väärsi, CEO of Milrem Robotics.

The Type-X can be equipped with a barrel of up to 50mm. The RCV can be launched from the air with a barrel of up to 30mm. The C-130J and KC-390 aircraft can carry one, an A400M two and a C-17 five.

"The vehicle will be equipped with intelligent functions such as tracking, waypoint navigation and obstacle detection, where artificial intelligence is part of the algorithms," says Väärsi. "In addition, our software developers have taken a totally innovative approach to enable remote control operations at higher speeds," he adds.

Weighing 12 tonnes and efficiently managing energy, the vehicle boasts excellent superior capability on the ground. Its 2.2 m height and a rear engine provide a low visual and heat signature.

The Type-X is three to four times lighter and costs significantly less than a conventional IFV. It has been designed with intelligent predictive maintenance combined with a utilization and health surveillance system and an online replacement unit method to ensure low life cycle cost and logistics footprint. Its hybrid powertrain and rubber tracks significantly reduce life cycle costs.

To create the Type-X, Milrem Robotics used the knowledge gained in the development of its THeMIS unmanned ground vehicle, intended to support dismounted troops, which has been acquired by ten countries, including seven NATO members: France, Norway , UK, US, Germany, the Netherlands, and Estonia.

Milrem Robotics is the European leader in robotics and autonomous systems development with two offices in Estonia, one in Sweden and Finland, and soon another in the Netherlands.

The company leads a consortium that was awarded € 30.6 million from the European Defense Industrial Development Program (EDIDP) to develop a European standardized unmanned ground system.
