X-Bow Systems Inc Announces DoD Contract for Hypersonic Solid Rocket Motor Development

11 October 2023

X-Bow Systems Inc is delighted to announce its selection by the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Industrial Base Policy for a substantial $64 million contract. This contract is to supply large solid rocket motors (SRMs) to both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. Through this agreement, X-Bow will emerge as a new and vital supplier of SRMs, effectively reinforcing the Defense Department's supply chain during this pivotal period for the United States. X-Bow's innovative manufacturing techniques for SRMs and energetics will significantly bolster SRM production capacity and cost-effectiveness.

X-Bow's SRMs will serve as the boost propulsion system for the Navy's hypersonic All Up Round (AUR), an integral component of the Navy's Conventional Prompt Strike weapon system and the Army's Long Range Hypersonic Weapon System. Collaborating with X-Bow in this endeavor are esteemed partners Leidos Dynetics and Karman Space & Defense.

This partnership adds a crucial dimension to domestic sources for the production of large-diameter SRMs. Jason Hundley, CEO and Founder of X-Bow, expressed, "This groundbreaking collaboration with the Department of Defense represents a major stride in advancing X-Bow's ongoing commitment to providing innovative and cost-effective hypersonic solutions. Our team recognizes the utmost importance of this endeavor and has prioritized this collaboration accordingly. X-Bow's distinctive ability to apply advanced manufacturing techniques for energetics and a groundbreaking approach to solid rocket motor development will swiftly and efficiently augment much-needed production capacity."

Dr. James Weber, DoD's Principal Director for Hypersonics, underscored the significance of this effort, stating, "This initiative is a critical component of the Defense Department's strategy to expedite the development and deployment of hypersonic systems, providing state-of-the-art capabilities and options to our armed forces. X-Bow will play a pivotal role in fortifying our ongoing advantage in national defense."

As articulated in Executive Order 14017, "Securing Defense-Critical Supply Chains," the establishment of robust and resilient supply chains to support hypersonic systems is a paramount priority for the DoD. Dr. Laura Taylor-Kale, ASD (IBP), affirmed, "This award signifies another essential step taken by the Department of Defense to expand the defense industrial base and explore innovative processes that will ensure the United States maintains its leadership in manufacturing capabilities. We eagerly anticipate collaborating with our partners at X-Bow and delivering new capabilities to the Conventional Prompt Strike and Army's Long Range Hypersonic Weapon programs."
