MAG Aerospace, L3Harris Team to Expand US Army's Aerial ISR Capabilities

23 August 2023

MAG Aerospace, the prime contractor, along with teaming partner L3Harris Technologies (NYSE: LHX), has secured a contract from the U.S. Army for the supply of two upgraded intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) aircraft. These aircraft will play a pivotal role in supporting the Army's Theater-Level, High-Altitude Expeditionary Next Airborne ISR-Radar program, known as ATHENA-R.

The cutting-edge system will be integrated onto Bombardier Global 6500 aircraft, bolstering the Army's global intelligence needs. Operating at high altitudes will grant the aircraft increased survivability and better line-of-sight capabilities, which are both crucial elements in the realization of the Army's objectives for long-range precision fires modernization.

MAG Aerospace holds the position of prime contractor for the Army's Sensor Technology Operations and Readiness (STORM) contract, underscoring its deep involvement in these critical capabilities that align with the company's mission of creating a safer and more connected world.

Joseph Reale, CEO of MAG Aerospace, expressed the company's pride in supporting the Army's ATHENA-R Program, highlighting the need for an adaptable and steadfast ISR solution in the face of current geopolitical circumstances. Reale stated, "MAG has a strong history of successfully delivering and managing comprehensive aerial C5ISR programs in the most challenging operational environments worldwide. This award validates the unwavering dedication of our employees working alongside our customers on a daily basis."

The ATHENA-R program is designed to bridge the gap between the Army's medium and high-altitude ISR aircraft fleet. It will offer enhanced endurance, greater payload capacity, extended standoff ranges, and cutting-edge sensor technology to bolster the mission needs of U.S. combatant commands.

Jon Rambeau, President of Integrated Mission Systems at L3Harris, highlighted the company's strong track record of collaboration with the Army and emphasized the urgency of providing these advanced capabilities to fulfill the Army's mission requirements.

Notably, L3Harris has been actively engaged in multiple Army ISR missions, having secured a contract in September 2022 to develop Phase 2 of the Army's Multi-Domain Sensing System program. The company also supports the Airborne Reconnaissance and Electronic Warfare aircraft mission known as ARES.
