Luxembourg's DoD partners with SES and HITEC to improve ground infrastructure for satellite communications

23 February 2024

The Luxembourg Directorate of Defense SES and HITEC Luxembourg announced today that the DoD has acquired two new ground stations following a tender to increase the resilience of the Luxembourg Armed Forces through secure access to satellite communications services to improve.

The ground stations, which will be installed at the Luxembourg Armed Forces military center in Diekirch, will be used for the GovSat-1 satellite services in the X and military Ka-band frequencies as well as for the Wideband Global Satcom (WGS) system, the backbone of the US Department of Defense satellite communications capabilities.

The two new ground stations strengthen resilience and improve the satellite communications infrastructure that was built by SES and HITEC Luxembourg 10 years ago. This brings the total number of special antennas to four. The new ground stations open up great potential to improve interoperability with NATO partners' systems, as envisaged in the country's defense strategy for the next few years.

Luxembourg Defense Minister Yuriko Backes said: “ Access to secure satellite communications systems has always been one of our country's priorities and strengths in order to improve our defense capabilities and fulfill our commitments to the EU and NATO. We will continue to exploit the potential of Luxembourg’s globally recognized know-how in the space sector to ensure our technological advantage and strengthen the resilience of our armed forces.”

“ It is an honor for SES to strengthen the Luxembourg government’s defense strategy by improving the resilience of satellite communications,” explains SES CEO Adel Al-Saleh. “ Following the successful installation of the first ground stations by the Luxembourg Army, we are pleased to expand the Army’s communications infrastructure using Luxembourg’s GovSat-1 system and improving interoperability with our partners’ systems.”

“ We are proud to be part of this project and to once again work with SES to enhance Luxembourg's defense capabilities with robust technology that has already proven to be highly capable,” says Philippe Osch, CEO of HITEC Luxembourg. “ We are particularly proud of the ground terminals supplied for the Luxembourg Army's satellite communications infrastructure, as they are the result of the latest technological innovations combined with the traditional top quality “made in Luxembourg”.
