airforce / landing aids guidance lighting

Landing aids, guidance and lighting refers to different approaches for guiding an aircraft/helicopter to a safe landing.

Landing is a crucial and difficult exercise in the course of an aircraft’s trajectory as it requires handling more controls, expertise, and judgment. Landing a military jet at higher velocities and with high precision is an even more daunting task for many fighter pilots.

Apart from manufacturing sturdy and precision landing gear landing aids for aircrafts are also manufactured in order to give heightened safety.

One of the methods used for landing guidance in military or commercial aviation are the Guidance-Controlled Approach (GCA). It uses the Precision Approach Radar (PAR) to accomplish the task. GCA is used mostly for low-visibility scenarios and for landing fighter jets quickly and precisely even when the landing strip is small and restricted during battle.

There are several other methods such as the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Transponder Landing System (TLS) that make use of the latest technology for error-free landing.
