Landing Aids, Guidance and Lighting
Landing aids are visual and electronic support systems that assist aircraft during approach, landing, takeoff and ground movement during low visibility or at night. These systems possess approach lighting arrays, runway edge lights, runway threshold lights, glide slope lights such as PAPI/VASI, taxiway lights and touchdown zone lights that guide the pilot to be on the right path of descent and runway. They are used with the navigating aids to provide a positive visual reference of the altitude, direction and run way position during the final stages of flight. They find wide application in both military and civilian airfields and improve accuracy of landing, reduce risk of operation, and ensure safe aircraft movement in various weather and visibility conditions. They play a crucial role in the safe and efficient functioning of airfields through augmenting pilot situational awareness.
