Engines, Transmission and Drive
The combined power generation and power transfer systems consist of aircraft engines, transmission and drive systems, which convert engine power into useful mechanical power and electrical power to perform other functions in the aircraft. The engine produces thrust or rotational power and the transmission system (usually a gearbox or accessory drive) distributes this power to other essential subsystems such as generators, hydraulic pumps, fuel systems and flight control mechanisms. Some reduction gearboxes in most aircraft (especially turboprops and helicopters) adjust engine speed to optimum values in accordance with rotors or propellers, and accessory drive systems ensure a constant working speed of on-board equipment. These components are interconnected and combined into the drive system to ensure that it creates an efficient power flow by use of propulsion and support systems. Together they are vital to the performance, reliability and operational efficiency of both manned and unmanned defense aviation platforms.
