US Navy Secretary Meets Defence Leaders

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen hosted US Secretary of the Navy Raymond Mabus to lunch yesterday, during which the two leaders affirmed the longstanding defence ties between Singapore and the United States.

Both navies interact extensively through bilateral and multilateral exercises, Mindef said, including the annual Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (Carat) exercise, which is aimed at sharpening maritime warfare capabilities. Carat has been held for 21 years running.

Secretary Mabus will also meet Permanent Secretary for Defence Chan Yeng Kit and Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Lai Chung Han, before leaving Singapore today.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) yesterday warned of yet another fake website that is phishing for visitors' personal information. The site - ica-spg.org - leads victims to key in their identity card and passport numbers.

Access to the official ICA website remains unaffected and no data has been compromised, the ICA said. Members of the public should use only the official website at www.ica.gov.sg for immigration matters.

A police report has been made against the phishing website.

Bank employee stole $50k from DBS vault

An assistant service manager entrusted with cash at the DBS bank vault at the POSB Ngee Ann City branch took close to $50,000 in cash to pay off loan sharks and to feed her gambling habit.

Kasturi Pakiyam Ramanathan, 39, was yesterday jailed for 13 months after she pleaded guilty to a charge of criminal breach of trust by a servant.

On various occasions between August and October 2014, she took $49,500 from the vault without permission.

A 26-year-old man was arrested by the Police Coast Guard for unlawful entry into Singapore yesterday.

The Coast Guard detected him swimming off Woodlands Waterfront at around 4.15am and deployed both land and sea resources to stop him.
