Voyager Space and Airbus announce international partnership for future Starlab space station

7 January 2023

Voyager Space  and  Airbus Defense and Space  are partnering to develop and operate Starlab, a free-flying space station for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and international customers in space agencies and researchers. Starlab is scheduled for launch in 2028 to ensure a continuous human presence in low Earth orbit.

Airbus Defense and Space will provide engineering design support and expertise for the Starlab space station, which will serve as an in-orbit laboratory for astronauts to conduct research and advance scientific discoveries. Starlab is designed and architected to provide 100% of the payload capacity of the International Space Station, with the ability to conduct hundreds of experiments and engineering research per year.

“We are proud to partner with Airbus Defense and Space to bring Starlab to life. Our vision is to create the most accessible infrastructure in space to serve the scientific community, said Dylan Taylor, CEO of Voyager Space. This partnership is unique in that it involves international partners under the free flight program for commercial destinations. By working with Airbus, we will expand the Starlab ecosystem to serve the European Space Agency (ESA) and the space agencies of its member states to continue their microgravity research in OTB. »

“This partnership with Voyager Space is the first step towards bringing the next generation of space stations into service for international astronauts. We are delighted to support a project that intends to change history, said Jean-Marc Nasr, Executive Vice President of Space Systems at Airbus Defense and Space. This collaboration is an important step in making Starlab a reality, and laying the foundations for sustainable European and American leadership in space. Our team is eager to dive into the technology and put our best engineers to work. »

Voyager and its operating company,  Nanoracks , secured a $160 million Space Act agreement from NASA in December 2021 to create Starlab, a continuously crewed, free-flying space station to replace the International Space Station. Starlab is designed to house the George Washington Carver Science Park, the first science park in space, where scientists and industry experts can share discoveries, collaborate and use new technologies to advance science and business .

"We thank NASA and our U.S. government partners for their continued support of our efforts to build a commercial destination in OTB to serve the U.S. and international research community," continued Dylan Taylor. We want Starlab to be the platform of choice for our customers around the world. This partnership with Airbus offers the possibility of continued and significant access to space by the United States and Europe . »
