Introduction:

Leonardo DRS announces that it has received a $45 million U.S. Navy Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) investment commitment through contracts with HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding.

Features:

The investment is expected to expand the capabilities of DRS’s new 140,000-square-foot naval propulsion manufacturing facility currently under construction in Goose Creek, SC. The funding includes capital equipment and infrastructure enhancements to support the growing demand for advanced submarine propulsion technologies. The $45 million SIB investment will drive a 40,000-square-foot expansion of the facility, enhancing capabilities essential for current and future U.S. Navy nuclear submarines and aircraft carriers.

This investment builds on multiple Navy-funded engineering contracts, including those from Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat, previously awarded to Leonardo DRS. Along with internal investments, these contracts will strengthen the company's steam turbine system design, manufacturing, integration, and testing capabilities, including steam turbine generators.

This new Leonardo DRS facility, set to open in 2026, will enhance naval propulsion capabilities and streamline support for the Columbia Class submarine program. Leonardo DRS is currently producing key electric propulsion components, including the main propulsion motor, drives, and controller, along with similar systems for international allied navies.

The facility will play a crucial role in supporting electric drive systems for next-generation naval platforms, expanding DRS’s in-house capabilities. This investment marks a significant collaboration with the U.S. Navy, strengthening the submarine industrial base and ensuring future fleet readiness.
