1 December 2020
Global technology leader Thales joins the Dutch Darmen Scherde Navy Shipbuilding Company and the four versatile combatant MKS180 scheduled for delivery to the German Navy. Announced that it has signed a contract on November 17, 2020 regarding the integration and implementation of the combat command system to be installed and the system. The system on board the battleship will be built at a shipyard in Germany, led by Dermen Scherde and under project management.
The € 1.5 billion agreement underscores Thales' track record in maritime defense. Manufacture will proceed in collaboration with several German subcontractors at the Center of Excellence, a naval research and development facility in Thales located in Hengelo, the Netherlands, Kiel and Birhelmshafen, Germany.
This agreement is based on the cooperative relationship in the naval industry of both Germany and the Netherlands and the achievements accumulated so far. In addition to Damen Scheldt, the Dutch Ministry of Defense has participated in a number of naval shipbuilding projects that Thales has collaborated with in the past. It also demonstrates the willingness of Damen Scheldt and Thales to further strengthen the partnership between the shipyard and its partners as one of the largest programs in Europe.
The solution provided by Thales includes the battle command system "TACTICOS" and the Fire Control Cluster (AWWS) of the Above Water Warfare System (AWWS). The contract includes a ship system for four MKS180s, logistics services, multi-site onshore training ground testing, and an optional addition of one or two vessels.
AWWS is a state-of-the-art combat system that enables you to counter and neutralize complex saturation attacks, continuously analyzing and optimizing your combat environment and ally resource placement. AWWS can be combined with Thales' proven AESA * multifunction radar evolution, the APAR * B12. Thales has also received an order for an AWWS development contract for the M-class frigate newly built by the Belgian Navy and the Dutch Navy in 2019.
In the past, we have received several large contracts from the NATO navy in Europe, and Thales' innovative solutions and reliability as a partner are highly recognized. Based on these contracts, Thales has become the de facto standard partner of NATO's naval combat system.
The first multi-purpose combatant MKS180 is scheduled to operate in 2028, and this collaboration program will continue for more than 10 years.
Gerben Edelijn, Chief Executive Officer of Thales Holland, said, "The ability to receive such a large contract within the rigorous framework of competitive bidding is our collective strength in maritime defense.
