Lockheed Martin selects Thales as supplier of aerial anti-submarine warfare sonars to the navies of the US, India, Greece and Denmark
28 April 2021
Thales has contracted with Lockheed Martin as a Tier 1 supplier for the delivery of up to 55 aerial anti-submarine warfare sonars. ALFS (Airborne Low Frequency Sonar) * immersion sonars will be installed on the platform of the US Navy's MH-60R and three other navies. The delivery of the first 42 systems will take place over the next five years, and the delivery of 13 optional systems will take place in the sixth year.
Thales has delivered more than 300 ALFS sonars to the US Navy since the early 2000s, and this new contract with Lockheed Martin is a further step in the Navy's readiness strategy. In turn, the navies of India, Denmark and Greece will receive the first deliveries of the ALFS sonar system through the United States' foreign military direct sales program for MH-60R platforms .
In order to control their maritime space and protect security interests around the world, naval forces need reliable, high-performance systems that perform to optimum effect on vital missions such as anti-submarine warfare, search, and warfare. maritime rescue, defense of maritime approaches and protection of the fleet of naval forces during their deployment.
The ALFS anti-submarine warfare system offers unparalleled protection to maritime convoys thanks to its ability to detect, classify, pursue, harass or attack submarines, making Thales the benchmark for the world's leading navies. In addition to the US Navy, navies that have chosen Thales immersion sonar solutions include Australia, the United Kingdom, France, Norway, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, Poland, South Korea. and the Philippines.
Being an active low-frequency sonar, ALFS was designed for the initial detection and tracking of opposing submarines. It offers a long detection range with a wide range of coverage and a low level of false alarms, both in deep waters and coastal. It can be used autonomously to clear a particular area or as complementary antisubmarine warfare weaponry to sonars aboard surface vessels to relocate and engage targets.
“Having earned the trust of the United States Navy and its allies and partners around the world is a source of pride for our team. This contract enhances our position as a strategic supplier to Lockheed Martin and further consolidates the Group's global leadership position in anti-submarine warfare systems. We will continue to improve the performance and competitiveness of our airborne sonars to overcome the new operational challenges in anti-submarine warfare facing our customers. " Alexis Morel, Vice President of Underwater Systems at Thales
