FLIR receives a $ 23 million order for its Centaur unmanned ground vehicles for the U.S. Air Force

3 March 2020

FLIR Systems, Inc. announced that the U.S. Air Force is ordering more than 180 of the company's Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGV) and spare parts Has. The $ 23 million order will be processed through the Department of Defense’s MTRS Inc II (Dept. of Defense Man Transportable Robotic System Increment II) program.

In 2017, the US Army chose FLIR Systems' predecessor, Endeavor Robotics, as a medium-sized robot supplier for MTRS Inc II. The company developed a redesigned UGV, Centaur, as an "MTRS Inc II" solution. FLIR has started delivering Centaur units to the army as part of this multi-year record program, which was valued at up to $ 158 million including options when awarded.

The Air Force Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams will use FLIR Centaur to help defuse improvised explosive devices (IEDs), unexploded ordnance, and other similar dangerous tasks. Centaur can be equipped with multiple sensors and payloads to support other missions.

"Centaur gives emergency workers an extremely versatile, portable UGV that helps save lives by keeping people safe," said David Ray, president of FLIR's Government and Defense business. "We are pleased that the Luftwaffe selected Centaur as their medium-sized robot solution and that the" MTRS Inc II "program can serve as an efficient procurement vehicle."

Centaur is a remote-controlled, medium-sized UGV system that offers the possibility of recognizing, verifying, identifying and eliminating dangers. The approximately 73 kg heavy, open-construction robot has an advanced EO / IR camera suite, a manipulator arm that extends more than two meters, and the ability to climb stairs. Its modular payloads can be used for CBRNE detection and other missions.

Deliveries are expected to begin in the second quarter of 2020. Further information on the unmanned floor systems from FLIR Systems can be found at www.flir.com/UIS/UGS .
