On November 14, 2025, Thales, a global leader in advanced defence technology solutions, and Universal Communication Systems Co. Ltd. (UCS), a prominent Thai defence contractor, announced a landmark agreement to equip the Royal Thai Navy’s flagship, HTMS Chakri Naruebet, with a cutting-edge Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). This contract, signed at the Defense & Security 2025 exhibition, marks a significant milestone in the modernization of Thailand’s maritime defence capabilities.

The IPMS is a comprehensive, modular, and scalable solution that will transform Chakri Naruebet’s operational infrastructure. As the only aircraft carrier in Southeast Asia, Chakri Naruebet’s effective deployment is vital to Thailand’s regional maritime sovereignty. By leveraging IPMS, the Royal Thai Navy (RTN) will gain sophisticated automation, real-time system monitoring, and streamlined interface integration connecting combat networks, navigation systems, training simulators, and critical shipboard hardware.

This project underscores a global trend where navies seek advanced automation to counter increasingly diverse and complex maritime threats. Process automation empowers operators to make rapid decisions, minimize risks, and increase mission effectiveness. For Chakri Naruebet, the IPMS will enable unified control over mechanical, electrical, and damage control systems throughout the vessel, substantially boosting reliability and operational safety. The system’s adaptability ensures it can be tailored precisely to the carrier’s size, age, and operational profile, heralding a new era of flexible mission readiness for the RTN.

Beyond technology deployment, the agreement has strategic implications for Thailand’s defence industrial base. UCS, designated as a Key Industrial Partner (KIP) of Thales, will receive extensive technology transfer and training in IPMS software and hardware. This capability-building initiative will empower UCS to perform local maintenance and sustainment, reducing reliance on external support and ensuring long-term self-reliance. Such partnerships advance Thailand’s “Thailand 4.0” strategy, fostering indigenous engineering talent and boosting the country’s position as a regional defence hub.

Thales has maintained a presence in Thailand for more than 55 years, forging deep collaborations with the RTN and other local defence stakeholders. Over 80% of Royal Thai Navy vessels today are equipped with Thales technologies, including advanced radars, sonars, mine-hunting systems, fire control, and Command & Control (C2) solutions. The addition of an IPMS on Chakri Naruebet extends this legacy, representing both the first implementation of such a solution for the RTN and a critical leap forward in platform digitalisation and resilience.
