South Korean Hanwha Aerospace to Assemble GE F404 Engines for FA-50 and KF-21 Fighter Jets

South Korea's Hanwha Aerospace has announced it will commence local assembly of General Electric's F404 engines, which power both the FA-50 light combat aircraft and the next-generation KF-21 Boramae fighter jets. The milestone agreement, disclosed on November 5, 2025, marks a significant leap in indigenous defence manufacturing within Asia's fast-evolving military aviation sector. It enables greater autonomy in critical propulsion technology for the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF), mitigating risks associated with foreign sourcing and aligning with Seoul's broader push for military industrial sovereignty.

The F404 engine, a combat-proven powerplant with a legacy in platforms such as the F/A-18 Hornet, has been selected as the propulsion backbone for Korea’s current and future indigenous airpower. By enabling Hanwha Aerospace to not only assemble but potentially co-produce core components, this initiative is expected to shorten supply chains, reduce logistical bottlenecks, and ensure swifter operational readiness for ROKAF assets — especially as regional tensions and procurement uncertainties heighten the need for onshore capability.

Industry leaders suggest this localisation move could also drive significant efficiencies by integrating Hanwha's established expertise in precision engineering and mass manufacturing with GE Aerospace’s advanced turbine technology. Initial assembly will involve semi-knock-down kits from GE, but the agreement outlines a roadmap for progressively increasing the local content share as technology transfer and joint process development advance. This transition will boost Korea’s ability to upgrade, service, and maintain its fighter jets without relying on trans-Pacific logistics or delayed imports.

Beyond operational independence, the deal has substantial industrial spillover. Local SMEs and tier-2 suppliers are expected to benefit through involvement in the regional supply chain, while Korea’s aerospace workforce will deepen its skills in high-performance engine assembly and testing. Hanwha officials have confirmed that investments will include new production equipment, high-precision tooling, and advanced workstations at the company’s Changwon facility, ensuring compliance with commercial and military quality assurance standards.

For defence contractors and system integrators, the news signals significant new opportunities in joint ventures, MRO (maintenance, repair, and overhaul) competencies, engine testbed development, and long-term sustainment services. GE's endorsement of Hanwha reflects rising global confidence in Korea's industrial base, which is poised to serve as a regional hub for engine support not only for Korean platforms but also potentially for wider Asia-Pacific users of F404-powered aircraft.

On the government procurement side, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) has cited this local assembly as a key deliverable under its 2025 Defence Innovation Plan, complementing investments in digital twin technology, predictive analytics for readiness, and advanced training for sustainment personnel. The contract also aligns strategically with Korea’s ambition to become an aerospace exporter, as seen with recent FA-50 export wins in Southeast Asia and ongoing marketing efforts for the KF-21.

Hanwha Aerospace’s move is particularly timely as Korea’s defence requirements shift toward more rapid modernization cycles. With the Korean Peninsula’s security environment demanding fleet resilience and immediate scalability, the capacity to assemble and eventually manufacture propulsion systems at home represents more than mere logistics — it is national security writ large, according to defense analysts.
