Pentagon Funds NioCorp and Lockheed Martin Joint Program to Develop Scandium-Based Aircraft Components

The U.S. Department of War has formally initiated a new phase of its supply chain modernization strategy, awarding a joint development contract to NioCorp Developments Ltd. and Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works division. This strategic agreement, announced today, centers on the development and prototype production of components utilizing a proprietary aluminum-scandium alloy, a material that holds promise for revolutionizing capabilities in modern fighter aircraft. NioCorp, recognized as a leading domestic critical minerals developer and publicly listed on NASDAQ, will connect its mining operations into Lockheed Martin’s advanced materials engineering, bridging the full spectrum from raw material extraction to end-component manufacturing.
The scandium-based defense technology program is positioned as a critical step in reducing historic U.S. dependence on foreign sources for scandium—a key mineral whose properties enable the creation of lighter, stronger alloys for aerospace applications. With NioCorp on track to produce 100 metric tonnes of scandium oxide annually, this domestic supply will support both defense and commercial markets, aligning with broader U.S. efforts to ensure resilient and secure supply chains for essential materials. This contract fits into the Pentagon’s broader push to source advanced materials domestically amid rising global competition and mounting risks to critical mineral supply. By leveraging U.S.-sourced scandium and combining it with the Skunk Works’ legacy of rapid prototyping and classified aerospace development, the initiative is expected to yield prototype alloy components that could be incorporated into the next generation of U.S. fighter planes.
