Navantia and Thales have formalised a significant business partnership with an agreement signed at the Defense & Security 2025 exhibition in Bangkok, marking a major milestone in the ongoing modernisation efforts for the Royal Thai Navy (RTN). This deal underscores the commitment of both defence technology providers to support and elevate Thailand’s naval capabilities through the deployment of advanced Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) systems.

Central to the agreement is the provision of three Thales IFF interrogation systems, which are slated to be integrated into two Pattani-class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) and the HTMS Chang Landing Platform Dock (LPD). Navantia will oversee the modernisation and integration, ensuring seamless compatibility between the new IFF systems and the RTN’s existing surveillance radars and combat management infrastructure. This marks the inaugural collaboration between Navantia and Thales within Thailand, signalling a broader intent to engage in future naval technology upgrades.

Thales’ IFF solutions deliver rapid, secure identification functionality essential for modern maritime operations, providing real-time situational awareness and mitigating risks associated with friendly fire and ambiguous contacts. The IFF interrogators are designed to identify a spectrum of objects, including military and civilian aircraft, offering integrated cryptographic solutions to safeguard the identification process. With more than 25,000 Thales IFF systems operating across 100+ platform types in over 70 countries, the technology’s reliability and interoperability are well-established among global naval fleets.

For the RTN, medium and long-range surveillance capacities are a priority, and Thales’ systems will be equipped with both interrogators and transponders, enabling full integration with the navy’s radar and surveillance ecosystem. The technology upgrade aims to enhance maritime threat response, operational discretion, multi-domain awareness, and secure command and control. Navantia was already awarded contracts earlier in the year for the specific modernisation of the Pattani-class OPVs and HTMS Chang LPD, and this enhanced partnership with Thales further reaffirms their dedication to delivering cutting-edge defence solutions for the RTN.

Jose Ignacio Navas, Navantia’s Commercial Director for Asia, highlighted the strategic relevance of the projects, noting that the agreement reflects Navantia’s ongoing commitment to Thailand and its strategic maritime requirements. Nicolas Bernardin, Country Director for Thales in Thailand, emphasised the company’s robust 55-year history of naval support within the region, with more than 80% of RTN warships currently equipped with Thales technology across functions including sensors, communications, mine-hunting, fire control, and C2 systems.

This business development is especially relevant against a backdrop of rapid technological advancements in Asia’s naval forces, as regional powers seek to upgrade fleet survivability and operational effectiveness. The Navantia-Thales partnership aligns with the prevailing trend among Asia-Pacific naval operators to implement advanced IFF, sensor, and surveillance solutions for better threat differentiation, coalition operations, and platform interoperability.
