Europe's Private Drone Industry Experiences Surge Amid NATO Defence Build-Up and 'Drone Wall' Initiative

Europe’s defence landscape is undergoing a substantial transformation as persistent drone incursions into NATO airspace lead to unprecedented investment and innovation in counter-drone technology. Sparked by a significant escalation in unidentified drone flyovers throughout September, NATO states and industry players are collaborating to devise advanced solutions aimed at protecting both critical infrastructure and military assets across the region. European leaders, alarmed by multiple incidents—including airspace closures at Copenhagen Airport and violations over military bases—are spearheading a "drone wall" initiative, dedicated to early detection, tracking, and neutralization of unauthorized aerial vehicles.

This climate of heightened vigilance is having a pronounced commercial impact. Danish companies at the forefront of anti-drone technology—such as Weibel Scientific, known for its sophisticated Doppler radar UAV detection, and MyDefence, developer of wearable jamming equipment—are witnessing surges in business. While MyDefence’s wearable "Wingman" detectors have been widely deployed in Ukraine, recent European drone overflights have prompted a wave of new orders from domestic and pan-European clients, including airports, military organizations, and infrastructure operators. Chief executive Dan Hermansen credits the Russia-Ukraine war as a decisive catalyst for this B2B demand, noting that their business, previously military-focused, is now expanding rapidly into government and high-value infrastructure protection sectors.

The evolving drone threat has pushed European NATO members, particularly Denmark, Poland, and Romania, to procure next-generation counter-UAV systems. The U.S.-made Merops platform, adaptable for vehicle or static deployment, is now active on NATO’s eastern borders, utilizing AI to overcome interference and reliably track drones even when satellite and electronic communications are disrupted. Simultaneously, companies like Weibel Scientific are investing heavily in radar innovations capable of distinguishing drones from birds or aircraft—a critical defence challenge given the subtle radar signatures of many contemporary UAV threats. Having secured a €65 million contract earlier in the year, Weibel expects its radar technology to form a central pillar of Europe’s future "drone wall."

The security focus extends beyond traditional military boundaries into critical sectors vulnerable to disruption—from airports and energy facilities to governmental operations and logistics centers. With drone warfare tactics continuously evolving—such as the introduction of fibre-optic tethered drones to circumvent radio-jamming strategies—the requirement for real-time, adaptive, and scalable countermeasures is more prominent than ever. According to Andreas Graae, assistant professor at the Royal Danish Defence College, "All countries in Europe are struggling to find the right solutions to be prepared for these new drone challenges… We don't have all the things that are needed to actually be good enough to detect drones and have early warning systems." European B2B defence contractors are investing in R&D to address these shortfalls and seize emerging market opportunities.

The confluence of recent multi-national agreements, significant technology procurement, and business expansion in anti-drone systems is fundamentally reshaping Europe’s defence industrial base. The commercial beneficiaries—ranging from specialized radar developers to radio-frequency jamming innovators—are aligning closely with NATO procurement priorities and are positioned to play a pivotal role in Europe’s hybrid warfare and infrastructure protection strategies. As political leaders accelerate their push for autonomous drones, integrated border surveillance systems, and advanced detection networks, European defence industry stakeholders are finding themselves at the forefront of NATO’s response to escalating security threats.
