EDGE and Viettel Forge Strategic Cooperation Framework Covering Advanced Defence Capabilities in Asia
19 November 2025
EDGE, the UAE’s advanced technology group for defence and beyond, and Viettel, a defence and technology conglomerate owned by the Vietnamese Ministry of Defence, have today announced the establishment of a comprehensive future cooperation framework. This landmark agreement aims to advance strategic defence capabilities in Asia through collaborative research, joint development, technology transfer, and potential co-manufacturing of next-generation defence systems. The signing of this framework marks a substantial step forward in the ongoing efforts of both companies to drive indigenous innovation, address regional security requirements, and position Asia as a key hub for advanced defence manufacturing and solutions integration.
The newly formalized framework encompasses a variety of key fields relevant to the evolving requirements of defence institutions and system integrators across Asia. Central focus areas include electronic warfare suites, smart weapons, unmanned ground and aerial vehicles, advanced communications platforms, cyber defence solutions, ISR (intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance) technologies, and emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and autonomous systems. Under this partnership, EDGE and Viettel intend to pool R&D resources, jointly pursue new projects, and enable rapid prototyping?—?ensuring Asia’s capability to respond quickly to emerging threats and operational demands.
This agreement strongly reinforces Asia’s ambition to build indigenous capacity in critical defence technologies. By consolidating expertise from EDGE’s portfolio, which includes cutting-edge missile systems, platform protection, and communications, alongside Viettel’s strengths in secure digital infrastructure, satellite communications, and sensor networks, the two entities aim to accelerate technology transfer to local industry partners. Both firms have committed to open knowledge sharing, skills development, and establishing co-production capabilities in Vietnam and the ASEAN region, creating regional value chains and boosting domestic industrial ecosystems. This is anticipated to reduce dependency on external suppliers, improve supply resilience, and enable customisation for specific operational theatres.
From a business perspective, the cooperation framework sets out pathways for co-bidding on government tenders, structured JV (joint venture) formation for large-scale procurement programs, and collaborative market entry into third countries. This approach supports the evolving procurement strategies of regional defence ministries, who increasingly require interoperable modular systems from trusted industrial partners. As Viettel expands its international presence, this partnership is expected to help unlock offset opportunities for both parties and scale production for export across Asia and beyond. Service offerings are likely to extend to through-life support, digital upgrade programmes, and simulation-based training for end-users.
Industry stakeholders note the strategic importance of this tie-up for B2B audiences. System integrators, government procurement agencies, and infrastructure providers will all benefit from streamlined vendor access, harmonized R&D roadmaps, and a greatly enhanced ability to address operational and digital transformation requirements in defence. The partnership will also accelerate the introduction of secure communications, robust cyber-defence architectures, and edge computing to military and security operations. Additionally, both companies are expected to establish working groups to develop minimum viable products and prepare them for rapid deployment, reducing lead times and optimizing lifecycle costs for government buyers.
Senior management at EDGE and Viettel expressed their optimism about the cooperation, citing the resilience and growth of defence innovation in Asia in response to both state and non-state threat actors. The agreement, officials say, will also foster talent development programs in STEM fields, support local university R&D hubs, and create reciprocal training pipelines, further contributing to national and regional industry growth.
