Belgium Announces NASAMS Air Defense Deployment at Port of Antwerp to Protect Critical Infrastructure

Belgium has taken a significant step in enhancing its national security by announcing the deployment of the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) at the strategically vital Port of Antwerp. Prime Minister Bart De Wever revealed this plan during the annual Port of Antwerp-Bruges community meet-up, emphasizing the system's role in protecting the port's extensive industrial and logistics infrastructure from potential aerial threats. The first battery of NASAMS is expected to cover nearly two-thirds of the port area upon deployment, scheduled to begin in 2027.

The NASAMS, a medium-range layered air defense solution developed by Norway's Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace and Raytheon, integrates a search radar, three to four missile launch units, and a fire control center. This configuration processes sensor data to issue precise engagement orders, making it highly effective against aircraft, cruise missiles, and other airborne threats that pose risks to coastal and industrial facilities like the Port of Antwerp. In addition to NASAMS, an anti-drone system has been procured to counter small, unregistered unmanned aerial systems (UAS) reported over sensitive sites, including nuclear power plants and chemical facilities in Belgium.

This deployment is part of Belgium's broader strategy to modernize and expand its air defense capabilities. In June 2025, the Belgian government signed a major contract for 10 NASAMS batteries through a joint agreement with the Netherlands, addressing long-standing capability gaps since the 1990s. Complementing this, Belgium has pursued short-range enhancements with Rheinmetall's Skyranger mobile air defense systems under the Strategic Vision 2025 framework. Furthermore, a letter of intent was signed in May 2025 for 200 to 300 Polish-made Piorun man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS) from Mesko, bolstering low-altitude protection against drones, helicopters, and similar threats.
