IDE Horizontal Drive

A disk on module (DOM) is a flash drive with either 40/44 pin IDE/Standard ATA Interface or SATA 7/22 pin Interface to be used as an alternative to either a hard disk drive (HDD) or solid state drive (SSD).  They are used particularly within embedded computing systems where they can often be deployed in very harsh environments (where mechanical hard disk drives would simply fail), or in a thin client because of small size, low power consumption and silent operation.  However, they are increasingly being used in a whole host of applications within various market sectors due to their price point, performance capabilities and flexibility.

Embedded USB

Embedded USB (EUSB) modules are very similar to DOMs, however they connect to the host motherboard via USB 1.1, USB 2.0 or new USB 3.0 high speed connection.  At the heart it is still a flash based drive designed to be used as a main boot and storage device for embedded systems. The EUSB’s small form-factor, lower power consumption and fast access times (specifically with USB 3.0) offer distinct technical advantages over more traditional mass storage devices.  Available in various capacity points up to 128GB and in both 5V and 3.3V power revisions, and offering random access times that are typically less than 1ms for the drive, the EUSB is a superb alternative to the more traditional DOM product.
