Six years after it selected the C-27J Spartan aircraft for its Air Force, Slovakia has signed contracts to acquire two of the aircraft from manufacturer Alenia Aermacchi.
The unit of Italy’s Finmeccanica signed a deal with the Slovak Defense Ministry on Oct. 29 which covers initial logistics and pilot and maintenance training, the firm said.
Slovakia, which aims to increase its NATO contribution with the new aircraft, choose the new airlifter to replace An-26 aircraft, but budget constraints delayed the purchase.
Alenia said the C-27J tactical transport has been ordered by the air forces of Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Romania, Morocco, the US, Mexico, Australia, Peru, an unnamed African country and now Slovakia, for a total of 78 aircraft.
